Exploring the Work Behind Leeds Heritage Theatres’ Productions

Garry Barnes, a Theatre Technician and Company Stage Manager at Leeds Heritage Theatres, recently shared insights into his varied role and experiences, particularly during the busy pantomime season. His account provides a detailed look at the day-to-day responsibilities involved in running live theatre productions at venues such as City Varieties and The Grand.

A Day in the Life of a Theatre Technician

Barnes describes his work as a theatre technician as highly dynamic, with no two days being the same. His tasks can include:

  • Welcoming new shows by unloading large trucks
  • Rigging lighting and sound equipment
  • Building and dismantling sets
  • Working closely with visiting companies during performances to ensure shows run smoothly
  • Performing administrative work and maintenance on theatre equipment during quieter periods

He notes that shows can vary in length, with some running for just a week and others lasting several weeks.

Changes During Pantomime Season

During the pantomime season, Barnes shifts from technician duties to the role of Company Stage Manager (CSM), focusing on a single production for an extended period—around 11 weeks. His responsibilities as CSM include overseeing technical, wardrobe, stage management, and cast needs to ensure the production aligns with the director’s vision. He also manages practical details such as supplies and the wellbeing of the company.

Challenges and Memorable Moments

Barnes highlights the intensity of pantomime season, with 63 performances in a short timeframe, requiring high morale and teamwork. He recalls an incident where the sound desk failed during a live show, necessitating calm and professional management to handle the disruption and communicate with both cast and audience without sound amplification.

He also shares a light-hearted anecdote involving a humorous backstage prank between cast members during a pantomime, illustrating the camaraderie and fun atmosphere behind the scenes.

Favourite Venues and Productions

When asked about his favourite venues, Barnes mentions both The Grand and City Varieties, citing their historical significance and personal connection. He admits to not having yet visited Hyde Park Picture House but intends to do so.

Regarding memorable shows, he praises productions such as Peter Pan Goes Wrong and Come From Away at The Grand for their cleverness and emotional impact.

Personal Reflections

Outside of work, Barnes enjoys spending time with his wife, walking their dog, and attending shows. He expresses satisfaction with his current role, describing it as his “favourite job.”
