Collaboration between Motor Vehicle and Media Make-up Departments

In October, students at Leeds City College’s Printworks campus took part in a live Road Traffic Collision (RTC) demonstration organised in partnership with the White Watch team from Hunslet Fire Station. The event provided a practical insight into emergency response and road safety, attracting over 300 spectators, including more than 100 participants.

Cross-Departmental Teamwork

The demonstration was a joint initiative between the Motor Vehicle department and Level 3 Media Make-up students. Media Make-up learners applied special effects (SFX) make-up to volunteer “casualties,” creating realistic injury effects to enhance the authenticity of the simulated crash scenario. This collaboration allowed students to combine technical knowledge with creative skills, as make-up students worked closely with motor vehicle students to understand the mechanics of car accidents and reflect this in their work.

Live Demonstration and Safety Education

The Fire Crew, led by Joe Richards, provided a detailed live explanation of the simulated crash. Attendees observed the use of specialist cutting equipment to safely extricate the “injured passengers” from the vehicle. This hands-on experience highlighted key aspects of road safety, including the risks associated with vehicle fires and the particular dangers posed by electric vehicles.

Additionally, the fire service’s Youth Interventions Team supported the event by discussing important safety topics such as:

  • Driving without a seatbelt
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Making safe choices behind the wheel

Educational Impact

The event provided students with a valuable opportunity to observe emergency procedures and understand the consequences of road traffic collisions. It also emphasised the importance of safety measures and responsible driving behaviour. The practical demonstration and educational talks aimed to reinforce awareness and encourage safer practices among young drivers and passengers.
