New Workshop Supports Formation of Community Groups in Leeds
November 25, 2025Voluntary Action Leeds offers updated course for emerging local groups
Voluntary Action Leeds has updated its workshop designed to assist new and emerging groups in Leeds to establish themselves effectively. The course, now titled Starting a New Group – all you need to know, is available free of charge to small voluntary, community, or faith groups based in Leeds.
Course purpose and eligibility
The workshop is intended for individuals or groups who wish to start small unincorporated associations or community groups, or for those who already have an active group but want to formalise their structure to enable growth or access funding. Examples of group activities include arts and recreational programmes, environmental initiatives, community improvement projects, support for people with limited resources, peer support for families, and mental health support.
It is important to note that this course is not designed for groups aiming to incorporate as a community interest company (CIC) or to register as a charity.
Topics covered in the workshop
- Clarifying the group’s purpose, target beneficiaries, and methods
- Advantages of formalising the group’s structure
- Drafting a constitution that outlines the group’s purposes and governance, ensuring democratic and accountable operation
- Key tasks required to become an established group, including sharing responsibilities, encouraging participation, and managing finances such as opening a bank account
- Identifying necessary policies and sources of support
- Developing an action plan for the group’s future

The workshop is exclusively available to small and emerging not-for-profit voluntary, community, or faith groups supporting Leeds communities. The upcoming face-to-face session is scheduled for 3 December 2025, from 9:45am to 12:30pm, at Voluntary Action Leeds.
