New appeal aims to establish Rob Burrow Centre for MND

On Global Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Awareness Day, Leeds Hospitals Charity has initiated a campaign to raise awareness and funds for the creation of the Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease in Leeds. The campaign highlights the ongoing need for specialised care and support for individuals affected by MND in the region.

Global MND Awareness Day and its significance

Global MND Awareness Day, observed on 21 June, is a day when millions worldwide acknowledge the impact of motor neurone disease. The day serves to recognise the challenges faced by those living with the condition, as well as the effect on their families and carers. It is also a time to remember those who have passed away due to MND. This year marks the first Global MND Awareness Day since the recent death of Rob Burrow, a former rugby league player whose battle with the disease brought significant public attention to MND.

Voices from the MND community

As part of the campaign, two patients currently receiving care from the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust’s MND service at Seacroft Hospital have shared their experiences. Rob Smitten and Nonly Reynolds are among those supported by the clinical team at the hospital, where Rob Burrow was also treated. Their stories aim to provide insight into the realities of living with MND and the importance of specialised care facilities.

Funding appeal for the Rob Burrow Centre

The campaign seeks to raise the remaining £700,000 needed to complete the appeal for the new centre. The Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease is intended to provide dedicated services and support for people affected by MND in Leeds and surrounding areas.

Leeds Hospitals Charity has emphasised the critical role that the centre will play in improving patient care and outcomes, as well as offering a hub for research and community support.
