Increased investment aims to maintain cleanliness in Leeds city centre

LeedsBID has announced an expansion of its Street Rangers team, increasing both its size and operational area to meet the demands of a growing city centre. The team, which operates seven days a week, is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and improving the public environment across Leeds.

Street Rangers team growth and new equipment

Since its launch in 2016, the Street Rangers have played a key role in street cleaning and maintenance. The recent expansion includes:

  • An increase in the number of Street Rangers
  • An extension of the geographical area covered within the city centre
  • The introduction of new green and electric cleaning technology

The upgraded equipment is designed to enable deeper and more efficient cleaning of high-footfall areas such as pavements, walkways, and pedestrian zones. It also allows the team to address graffiti removal in locations where chemical treatments are unsuitable.

Service scope and recent activity

The Street Rangers undertake a variety of tasks, including street washing, chewing gum removal, and rapid-response clean-ups on both public and private properties. Over the past year, the team has completed more than 50 large-scale deep cleans in key city centre locations and responded to over 2,000 individual requests from businesses.

Since the service began, the team has carried out an estimated 800 deep cleans—equivalent to a distance from Leeds to London—and more than 23,000 daily reactive cleans.

Statements from LeedsBID

Andrew Cooper, Chief Executive of LeedsBID, commented on the expansion: “The LeedsBID Street Rangers are one of our most impactful additions to Leeds city centre, making a visible difference to the streets beneath people’s feet. Their enormous impact on the aesthetics of Leeds has created an ever-increasing demand and growing expectation from the city and businesses, who now rightly prioritise this vital service.”

He added that LeedsBID is committed to continuing investment in the Street Rangers team and working with various facilities partners to maintain the city’s appearance.
