New publication shares recipes and stories from women affected by domestic abuse

Leeds Women’s Aid, a charity supporting women and families affected by domestic abuse, has launched a recipe book titled Holding Warmth. The book features recipes and personal stories contributed by women currently staying in the charity’s refuge accommodation. It aims to highlight the role of food in providing comfort, warmth and connection during difficult times.

Content and contributors

Holding Warmth includes a variety of recipes ranging from snacks and main meals to desserts. Several dishes are vegetarian and budget-friendly, designed to suit families. Each recipe is paired with an anecdote or memory from the contributor, reflecting the significance of the dish in their lives.

The book’s introduction is written by Liz Cottam, a Leeds chef recognised by the Michelin Guide, who supports the project and emphasises the therapeutic benefits of cooking.

Voices from the refuge

Women living in the refuge have also contributed to the design and artwork of the book, incorporating messages and quotes to empower readers. One contributor shared how participating in the project has been meaningful during her recovery from domestic abuse, expressing pride in sharing a meal that symbolises warmth and connection for her family.
