Councillor Harland Receives MBE in New Year Honours

Councillor Mary Harland has been awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2026 New Year Honours in recognition of her political service representing the Kippax and Methley ward and her role as Leeds City Council’s executive member for housing.
Details of Councillor Harland’s Service
Since 2012, Councillor Harland has served as a Labour councillor for the Kippax and Methley ward. Over the years, she has held various executive board portfolios including communities, customer service, and community safety, demonstrating a long-standing commitment to local governance and public service.
In a letter to Councillor Harland, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer acknowledged her “remarkable contribution” as both a councillor and executive board member. He noted that her “dedication and service have made a lasting impact to your local community” and that her “commitment to excellence embodies the very spirit of the honours system.”
Responding to the award, Councillor Harland described the recognition as “really lovely” and expressed humility, highlighting the dedication of many of her colleagues in public service across the council.
Other Honourees from Leeds City Council
Two former Leeds City Council employees were also named in the New Year Honours list:
- Gail Faulkner received an OBE for her work in children’s social work services, notably as former head consultant of the Leeds Relational Practice Centre.
- George Munson was awarded an MBE for services to net zero and the heat network centre, having served as energy and climate change manager.
