Funding Secured to Expand Digital Support for Older LGBTQ+ People
January 12, 2026New digital inclusion hubs to support older LGBTQ+ individuals across West Yorkshire
A Yorkshire-based LGBTQ+ charity, Out Together, in partnership with the digital health platform Patient.info, has secured government funding to expand digital services aimed at older LGBTQ+ people in West Yorkshire. The funding comes from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology’s Digital Inclusion Innovation Fund and will support the development of digital inclusion hubs and related services.
Addressing health and social inequalities
The initiative targets health and social inequalities that can affect older LGBTQ+ individuals, who may be at increased risk of poor health outcomes, financial vulnerability, and social isolation. By expanding digital inclusion hubs, the project aims to improve the wellbeing of hundreds of people in the region.
The hubs are designed to empower users to engage with technology on their own terms, offering more than just basic device training. They provide a safe and welcoming environment where people can learn at their own pace, meet others, share experiences, and rebuild social connections.
Services offered at the digital inclusion hubs
- Group training sessions
- Peer-to-peer learning led by community volunteers
- One-to-one support tailored to individual needs
- Access to digital devices
- Support with using email, video calls, online banking, NHS services, and other essential digital tools
The pilot digital inclusion hub in Leeds has already reported considerable success. Thomas Porteus, Chair of Out Together, highlighted the importance of digital confidence for accessing healthcare and managing wellbeing, noting that many older LGBTQ+ people remain excluded from these opportunities.
He commented: “Through this partnership with Patient.info, we can combine trusted health expertise with safe, welcoming community spaces. I am proud that Out Together is helping people take control of their digital lives and feel more connected to the support they deserve.”
Expansion plans and future developments
The project plans to open five additional digital inclusion hubs in Bradford, Wakefield, Huddersfield, Hebden Bridge, Harrogate, and York. Alongside this regional expansion, Out Together and Patient.info are developing a national digital health hub and volunteer network. This will provide sustainable, long-term support and allow access to services for those unable to attend in person.
This initiative represents a collaborative effort to reduce digital exclusion and improve access to health and social support for older LGBTQ+ people in West Yorkshire and beyond.
