Local Arts Organisation Supports Learning-Disabled Community
January 14, 2026Creative Approaches at Purple Patch Arts
Sarah, a staff member at Purple Patch Arts, shared her experiences working with the organisation, which supports learning-disabled people through creative activities. Since joining in 2018, Sarah has progressed from volunteer to programme leader, contributing to a range of artistic and therapeutic sessions.
Sarah’s Journey at Purple Patch Arts
After graduating with a drama degree, Sarah began volunteering at Purple Patch Arts in September 2018. She was drawn to the organisation’s use of art, music, and drama as tools for connection and self-expression. By December 2018, she became a permanent staff member, initially working two days a week. Over time, she took on more responsibilities, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic when sessions moved online via Zoom. This period marked her transition to a programme artist and eventually a programme leader.
Creative and Supportive Activities
Sarah described a variety of activities designed to engage participants in multi-sensory and emotional experiences. These have included:
- Obstacle courses
- Mindfulness sessions incorporating yoga and self-massage
- Songwriting and poetry
- A session exploring Masala chai, involving smelling spices, choreographed dance, and creating a group mural using tea-infused paint
She highlighted the supportive atmosphere within the groups, where participants feel accepted and able to share their difficulties openly, receiving emotional support from others.
