Student Leadership Race at Leeds University Offers Career Insights
February 9, 2026How running for LeadLUU can influence future career paths
LeadLUU is the annual student leadership election at the University of Leeds, where students compete to become Student Officers and lead the Leeds University Union (LUU) for a year. Recognised as one of the largest student elections in the UK, this event attracts considerable attention on campus each year.
Doug Muzawazi, Director of Engagement at LUU and a former candidate in student elections, shared his experience of running for student leadership and how it shaped his career trajectory.
Motivations for running
Doug initially decided to run for student election during his time at Sheffield Hallam University. His motivation combined practical employment considerations with a desire to support student clubs and societies. Through involvement in the cricket club committee and engagement with the Students’ Union there, he developed an understanding of the union’s role and felt he could contribute meaningfully.
Skills developed through campaigning
Campaigning for a student leadership position helped Doug build confidence in engaging with unfamiliar people and improved his communication and pitching abilities. He described the experience as stepping outside his comfort zone, which taught him to be brave and adaptable—qualities he found valuable throughout his career.
Career opportunities and new directions
Serving as a student officer opened career possibilities that Doug had not previously considered, particularly within student unions and the non-profit sector. His role included responsibilities as a trustee, overseeing the charitable aspects of the union and its partnerships. Initially interested in events management, he found his experience in student leadership broadened his perspective on potential career paths, leading him to continue working in student unions.
Leadership and handling challenges
Doug emphasised that the election process highlighted the importance of leadership and clear communication. He led a campaign team and worked with volunteers, learning to provide appropriate support and set clear expectations. These experiences enhanced his confidence in presenting ideas and managing teams.
Reflections on career impact
Looking back, Doug noted that without running in the elections, he might have pursued roles in events, sports management, or leisure services. Instead, his current role within the student union allows him to engage in a variety of activities, which he finds rewarding.
Advice for prospective candidates
For students considering running but feeling uncertain, Doug advises viewing the process as an opportunity for personal and professional growth. While it may feel challenging, the experience offers significant rewards in terms of skill development and confidence, regardless of the election outcome.
LeadLUU continues to provide students at the University of Leeds with a platform to develop leadership skills and contribute to campus life.
