What follows after nomination in the LeadLUU student leadership elections?

Students at Leeds University who have nominated themselves or been nominated for the LeadLUU student leadership elections are now entering the next stages of the election process. The LeadLUU elections provide an opportunity for students to take on leadership roles within the student union, contributing to campus life and representing their peers.

Steps after nomination

Once nominated, candidates are required to follow a structured process before officially launching their campaigns. The process includes several mandatory steps designed to prepare candidates for their roles and responsibilities.

1. One-to-one meeting

Each candidate must book a one-to-one conversation with a member of the Democracy and Campaigns Team or a Student Executive Officer. This meeting aims to:

  • Clarify the eligibility criteria and requirements for the role
  • Explain the overall LeadLUU election timeline
  • Discuss the differences between various leadership roles
  • Provide a chance to ask questions about commitments and responsibilities
  • Allow candidates to explore their ideas and begin engaging with the student body

The staff member involved will continue to offer support throughout the campaign period.

2. Candidate Confirmation Form and documentation

Following the one-to-one meeting, candidates must complete a Candidate Confirmation Form to formally confirm their intention to stand. They are also required to read and sign several key documents, including:

  • LeadLUU Candidate Agreement
  • Student Executive Letter of Commitment
  • Office Holder Code of Standards
  • Disclosures Form
  • LeadLUU Campaign Rules
  • LeadLUU Guidance & Explainer

Completion of these forms is mandatory prior to attending the Candidate Academy.

3. Candidate Academy attendance

Attendance at the Candidate Academy, held on 24 or 25 February, is compulsory. This workshop serves as the main preparation event for candidates, covering:

  • Principles of fair and effective campaigning
  • Roles and responsibilities of student leaders
  • Guidance on drafting candidate statements
  • Opportunities to meet fellow candidates and discuss ideas with staff

After completing the academy, participants officially become LeadLUU candidates.

4. Campaigning

Once confirmed, candidates may begin their campaigns. Key activities include:

  • Creating social media pages to communicate their platforms
  • Engaging with students to listen to their priorities and concerns
  • Recruiting peers to assist with campaign materials such as posters and videos

Understanding the student body is emphasised as essential for effective leadership and meaningful change.

Preparing for the process

Before the one-to-one meeting, candidates are encouraged to discuss ideas with friends, flatmates, coursemates, and societies to identify common themes or issues relevant to the student community. Various candidate resources are available to support planning and campaign development.

Further information about roles, timelines, and expectations can be found in the LeadLUU 2026 guide. Additional resources produced by the University of Leeds are also accessible to help prospective candidates align their campaigns with student priorities.
