Local plumbing student secures place in national competition final

Maxton Young, a Level 3 Plumbing and Domestic Heating student at Leeds College of Building (LCB), has been named the North East Regional Winner in the HIP Magazine Learner of the Year competition. The award recognises emerging talent in the plumbing and heating industry and qualifies Maxton for the Grand Final later this year.

About the Competition

HIP Magazine, established in 2006, supports plumbing and heating students and apprentices across the UK. Each year, the publication hosts a competition designed to test the practical skills of participants through live challenges held at six regional heats. These heats assess the technical abilities of students under timed and competitive conditions.

Regional Heat and Judging

The North East regional heat was hosted at Gateshead College, where Maxton impressed the judges with his workmanship and technical skill. His performance earned him the regional title and a place in the Grand Final.

Comments from Tutor and Student

  • Josh Pye, Maxton’s tutor: “It’s fantastic to see Max achieve this. I’ve taught him for over three years, and I genuinely believe he has what it takes to go on and win the Grand Final. I’ll be supporting him all the way.”
  • He also expressed enthusiasm about encouraging more students to participate in similar competitions to challenge themselves at a high level.
  • Maxton Young: “It feels really good. I’ve put a lot of hard work into my college work and my job, so it’s great to see my workmanship paying off. I’m looking forward to learning more skills throughout my time at college and on the job, so I can become a good engineer and provide good quality plumbing and heating services.”
