Year 10 pupils attend hands-on workshops at Leeds College of Building

Year 10 students from local schools recently took part in a ‘Constructing Careers’ event held at Leeds College of Building’s South Bank Campus. The event, organised in partnership with Yorkshire Children’s Charity, aimed to introduce young people to career opportunities within the construction and built environment sectors.

Workshops and Practical Experience

Students from Lawnswood School and Mount St Mary’s Catholic High School participated in a range of workshops focused on architecture and structural engineering. Industry representatives from companies including Henry Root and Hexa joined college lecturers to provide insights into the construction industry and the variety of roles it offers.

The day included practical sessions where students could experience aspects of construction work first-hand. One highlight was a bricklaying workshop led by Leeds College of Building lecturer Gurjit Rayat, where students learned the basics of brickwork. Staff and volunteers from the participating schools also took part in a bricklaying competition that concluded the event.

Encouraging Career Awareness

Julia Day, Programmes Manager for Yorkshire Children’s Charity, emphasised the importance of broadening students’ awareness of career options. She noted that construction offers diverse opportunities, from trades such as bricklaying and electrical work to office-based roles.

Rob Smith, Head of Partnerships & Skills at Leeds College of Building, highlighted the significance of such events in supporting young people at risk of becoming Not in Education, Employment, or Training (NEET). He praised the enthusiasm of the students and remarked on the positive engagement demonstrated throughout the day.

Event Background

  • This was the second consecutive year Leeds College of Building has hosted the event at its facilities.
