£1 Million Appeal to Enhance Radiotherapy at Leeds Cancer Centre
March 17, 2026New technology aims to improve patient experience and treatment accuracy
On World Cancer Day, Leeds Hospitals Charity launched a £1 million fundraising appeal to support advancements in radiotherapy treatment at Leeds Cancer Centre. The funds will contribute to the expansion of Surface Guided Radiotherapy (SGRT) and the installation of MapRT planning software, positioning Leeds as the first radiotherapy centre in the UK to adopt this technology.
Surface Guided Radiotherapy (SGRT)
SGRT employs highly accurate 3D camera technology installed around the treatment room to track the patient’s body surface during radiotherapy sessions. This real-time surface imaging ensures that patients are positioned correctly for each treatment, potentially improving the precision of radiotherapy delivery.
MapRT Planning Software
MapRT uses camera technology to create a full-body 3D model of the patient, which supports highly precise radiotherapy planning. This allows clinicians to visualise how the patient’s body will interact with the radiotherapy machine, enhancing treatment accuracy.
Benefits for Patients
- Elimination of the need to wear closed face masks during radiotherapy
- Removal of permanent treatment tattoos, particularly benefiting children and young people
These developments aim to improve the comfort and overall experience for patients undergoing radiotherapy, while maintaining or enhancing treatment effectiveness.
The appeal highlights Leeds Cancer Centre’s commitment to adopting innovative technologies to improve cancer care. Further details about the fundraising campaign and its progress can be found on the Leeds Hospitals Charity website.
