Local institution joins regional effort to reduce road casualties

Leeds City College has announced its commitment to enhancing road safety across Leeds and the wider West Yorkshire area by signing the Vision Zero Pledge. This pledge is part of a broader regional strategy aimed at eliminating deaths and serious injuries on local roads by 2040.

Vision Zero Strategy and Pledge

The Vision Zero Pledge was launched alongside the Leeds and West Yorkshire Vision Zero Strategy, which encourages individuals and organisations to commit to safer road use. Leeds City College joins a coalition that includes the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, local councils, emergency services, and healthcare providers such as Leeds Teaching Hospitals.

According to data cited by the initiative, an average of one person dies each week on West Yorkshire roads, with thousands more sustaining injuries annually. The Vision Zero 2040 ambition seeks to reduce these figures to zero deaths and serious injuries by 2040.

How the Public Can Support Road Safety

The pledge invites all road users to contribute to safer roads regardless of their mode of travel. Recommended actions include:

  • Driving within safe speed limits
  • Minimising distractions, such as mobile phones and other devices
  • Wearing seatbelts at all times
  • Maintaining vehicles to ensure they are roadworthy
  • Allowing sufficient space for other road users
