Funding available to support local initiatives addressing suicide risk

Leeds City Council Public Mental Health and Leeds Community Foundation have announced that applications are now open for Suicide Prevention Grants. These grants aim to support third sector community projects in Leeds that focus on people at risk of suicide, reflecting priorities outlined in the Leeds Suicide Audit and Leeds Suicide Prevention Action Plan.

Grant Details and Eligibility

The funding is available in two categories: Large Grants and Small Grants. Both types of grants are intended to support activities that address suicide risk factors or target population groups identified as vulnerable in local suicide prevention strategies.

  • Large Grants: £10,000 to £25,000, for projects lasting 12 to 24 months.
  • Small Grants: Up to £10,000, for projects lasting up to 12 months.

Applicants must run their activities within Leeds, although organisations can be registered or based outside the region. Priority will be given to organisations based or registered in Leeds with a strong understanding of local communities and the Leeds Suicide Audit.

Application Criteria

Applicants are encouraged to provide evidence of need for their projects by referencing the Leeds Suicide Audit, Leeds Suicide Prevention Action Plan, or the Suicide Prevention Strategy. The following points summarise key criteria and priorities for applications:

  • Projects should address risk factors for suicide or focus on groups at higher risk.
  • Applications from or benefiting under-represented groups such as LGBTQIA+, racially minoritised communities, and d/Deaf or disabled people are actively welcomed.
  • The requested grant amount should cover at least 50% of the total project cost.
  • Only one application per organisation will be considered.

Examples of Funded Activities

Examples of activities that may be supported include:

  • Building social connections and reducing isolation.
  • Fostering a sense of hope and purpose.
  • Promoting protective factors for wellbeing, such as the Five Ways to Wellbeing or similar models.
  • Providing early intervention and tailored support addressing risk factors identified in the Leeds Suicide Audit.
  • Continuation work or extension funding for existing projects ending in 2026.
  • New project development.

Application Deadlines and Decisions

  • Deadline for both Large and Small Grants: 27 April 2026 at 12 noon.
  • Decision notification: June 2026.
