April 13, 2026Community hub offers activities to reduce social isolation
The Hamwattan Centre in Gipton is providing companionship and support to socially isolated older adults in the local area. Operating three days a week, the centre offers a range of activities aimed at promoting wellbeing and social interaction among its members.
Activities and environment
The centre hosts various sessions including gentle exercise classes, computer lessons, board games, and group storytelling. A key feature is the shared lunch, which encourages socialising in a friendly and inclusive setting. This meal is tailored to meet individual dietary needs, ensuring all participants can enjoy it comfortably.
The environment at Hamwattan Centre is designed to be safe and welcoming, allowing older adults to connect with peers, share experiences, and engage meaningfully within their community.
Impact on members
One attendee, Mr Allahditta, a stroke survivor who lives with his wife, has found the centre to be a significant positive influence. With his children living abroad, he previously experienced isolation at home. Attending the centre, primarily on Mondays and occasionally on Tuesdays, has become the highlight of his week.
Mr Allahditta appreciates the lively atmosphere where he can share stories, discuss current affairs, and reminisce. He has highlighted the importance of the shared lunch and the supportive presence of staff and volunteers who help create a welcoming environment.
“Mondays didn’t really mean anything significant to me for the longest time, but since I’ve started coming to Hamwattan Centre, that’s changed. I really look forward to the start of the week now, to come and hang out with my friends and have a nice meal with them.”
Community benefits
The centre’s activities demonstrate how community-led initiatives can reduce social isolation and improve quality of life for older adults. Staff and volunteers observe that members often arrive with visible enthusiasm, engaging in lively conversations and enjoying the social interaction.
Hamwattan Centre’s work highlights the potential to reach more older people in Leeds, offering them companionship, purpose, and enjoyment on a regular basis.
