The musical Operation Mincemeat, which has enjoyed critical acclaim in London’s West End and on Broadway, begins its first UK tour with a stop at Leeds Grand Theatre from 7 to 12 September 2026. The production is based on a true World War II espionage operation and is notable for its inventive storytelling and multi-role performances.

Background and creative origins

The musical was created by the comedy collective SplitLip, consisting of Felix Hagan, Zoë Roberts, Jak Malone, David Cumming, Natasha Hodgson, and Claire-Marie Hall. The group developed the show after extensive research into the real Operation Mincemeat, a British intelligence plan that played a pivotal role in the Allied invasion of Italy during World War II.

One intriguing aspect of the story is the involvement of Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond, who was an MI5 operative at the time. This connection inspired the creators to approach the story with a blend of humour and historical drama, resulting in a musical that combines various musical styles from period ballads to contemporary hip-hop.

The story of Operation Mincemeat

The plot centres on a deception plan where British intelligence planted false invasion plans on the body of a deceased Allied officer, which was then left off the coast of Spain to mislead Nazi forces. The success of this ruse led the Germans to divert their troops, facilitating the Allied campaign to retake Italy.

The musical features five actors playing over 80 roles, showcasing rapid character changes and gender-switching performances. This approach highlights both the complexity and the darkly comic nature of the historical events.

Critical reception and tour cast

Since its debut, Operation Mincemeat has received widespread praise, including 87 five-star reviews and Olivier Awards. The UK tour cast includes returning performers from the West End production such as Christian Andrews, Holly Sumpton, Seán Carey, and Charlotte Hanna-Williams, alongside new cast member Jamie-Rose Monk.

Christian Andrews, who plays Hester Leggatt, a secretary involved in the operation, noted the personal resonance the story has for British audiences, many of whom learn about the events in school or through family stories.
