Leeds rugby legend takes on new role in festive theatre production

Sir Kevin Sinfield, former captain of Leeds Rhinos and well-known rugby league figure, will make his pantomime debut this Christmas as the voice of The Giant in the Carriageworks Theatre’s production of Jack and the Beanstalk. The show runs from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027.

New role for a sporting icon

Sinfield, who has been a prominent figure both on and off the rugby pitch, recorded his parts at Leeds-based Our House Studio. The production is a family-friendly pantomime featuring costumes, musical numbers, audience participation, and a story centred on bravery and family values.

Speaking about his involvement, Sir Kevin said he was honoured to be part of the festive tradition in Leeds, a city that has played a significant role in his life. He acknowledged the challenge of voicing The Giant, a character quite different from those he has faced in his sporting career.

Charity work and community recognition

Sir Kevin is also known for his extensive fundraising efforts for Motor Neurone Disease (MND) charities, inspired by his late friend and former teammate Rob Burrow, who died from MND in 2024. To date, Sinfield has raised around £11 million for MND causes and plans to complete his final fundraising challenge in September 2026, running an ultra-marathon every day for seven days.

In keeping with his charitable work, Sir Kevin has donated his pantomime fee to MND charities. Both he and Rob Burrow were awarded the Freedom of Leeds in 2022, the city’s highest civic honour.

Leeds City Council’s executive member for economy, Councillor Salma Arif, welcomed Sinfield’s involvement in the Carriageworks Theatre production. She highlighted his status as a local hero and the added excitement his participation brings to the festive season in Leeds.
