New Political Composition of Leeds City Council Revealed

Leeds City Council enters no overall control after local elections

The recent local elections in Leeds, held on 6 May 2026, have resulted in a change to the political makeup of the city council. A total of 36 seats were contested across all 33 wards, including additional vacant seats in Adel and Wharfedale, Morley North, and Temple Newsam.

Election Results and Council Composition

Following the elections, the Leeds City Council now comprises 99 seats in total. The distribution of seats among the political parties is as follows:

  • Labour (LAB): 48 seats, a net loss of 8 seats
  • Conservative (CON): 14 seats, a net gain of 1 seat
  • Green Party (GR): 11 seats, a net gain of 5 seats
  • Reform UK (REF): 10 seats, a net gain of 8 seats
  • Liberal Democrats (LD): 6 seats, unchanged
  • Garforth and Swillington Independents Party (GSIP): 3 seats, unchanged
  • Morley Borough Independents (MBI): 3 seats, unchanged
  • Social Democratic Party (SDP): 3 seats, unchanged
  • Independent: 1 seat

With no single party holding a majority, the council is currently under no overall control. Labour remains the largest party on the council despite its reduced number of seats.

Voter Turnout

The overall voter turnout for the city was recorded at 41.49%, reflecting the proportion of registered voters who participated in the election.
