Demolition complete as Leeds City Council prepares housing proposal

Leeds City Council has announced plans to develop new council housing on the site of the former Kingsdale Court flats in the Boggart Hill area of Seacroft. The council completed the demolition of the eight medium-rise blocks last year and is now consulting on proposals for a new housing scheme aimed at providing affordable homes for local residents.

Details of the proposed development

The planned development includes:

  • 20 houses with two or three bedrooms each
  • A pair of buildings containing a total of 59 apartments, each with one or two bedrooms

The homes are intended for rent by people on Leeds’s housing register and will be built to high energy efficiency standards. The scheme also includes landscaped outdoor areas to complement the new housing.

Community engagement and consultation

Leeds City Council is actively engaging with local residents and businesses to gather feedback on the proposals before submitting a planning application. Nearly 500 properties have received leaflets outlining the plans along with questionnaires to collect views.

Residents can learn more and discuss the proposals with council representatives at a drop-in event:

  • When: Monday 18 May, 2pm to 7.30pm
  • Where: St Richard’s Church, Ramshead Hill

Following this, display boards detailing the scheme will be available at Deacon House, Seacroft Avenue, from 19 to 25 May.

Feedback can be submitted by 25 May via the following methods:

Background and next steps

Kingsdale Court was built in the 1960s but had suffered from poor housing conditions, low occupancy, and issues related to crime and anti-social behaviour. The council acquired the 88 flats and associated management rights from private owners in May last year.

Subject to planning approval, construction on the new homes is expected to begin next year. The development forms part of Leeds’s Council Housing Growth Programme, which has delivered hundreds of homes for local tenants in recent years.

Council statement

Councillor Mary Harland, executive member for housing, said the plans demonstrate the council’s commitment to providing quality, energy-efficient, and affordable housing across Leeds. She encouraged local people to review the proposals and provide feedback before the planning application is submitted.
