Plans to introduce specialist weekend markets aim to revitalise Pudsey Market

Pudsey Market is set to enter a new phase following a public consultation that highlighted its valued role within the local community. Leeds City Council received nearly 750 responses during the consultation, which sought views on how to enhance the market’s appeal amid increasing competition from online and out-of-town shopping.

Community support for the market remains strong

The consultation revealed that 91% of respondents believe there is still a role for a market in Pudsey, with many recognising its historical significance in shaping the town’s character. Among those who currently shop at the market, 70% cited the “community feel” as its main attraction, alongside friendly staff and convenience.

Introducing specialist weekend markets

In response to the feedback, the council has decided to open the market space for private hire on Saturdays and Sundays. These weekend markets will feature a rotating programme of specialist themes, such as:

  • Street food
  • Vintage goods
  • Arts and crafts
  • Farmers’ markets
  • Second-hand items

According to the consultation, 89% of respondents expressed interest in seeing different specialist markets each weekend, while 80% supported the inclusion of farmers’ markets. Additionally, 61% of potential traders indicated they would like to participate on both Saturdays and Sundays.

Maintaining existing market days and promoting growth

The market’s current operations on Tuesdays and Fridays will continue unchanged, with plans to increase promotional activities to attract more shoppers and traders. It is hoped that weekend events will encourage visitors to return during the week, supporting the market’s overall vitality.

Addressing financial challenges

The market has experienced a decline in the number and variety of stalls, reflecting wider national trends in shopping habits. This has resulted in rental income covering only about half of the council’s running costs for the site. The new weekend market programme is intended to improve the market’s financial sustainability.

Next steps

Further details about the specialist weekend markets, including their launch date, will be announced after discussions with prospective operators. The initiative aims to build on the success of similar events held at Leeds Kirkgate Market, which have attracted significant community engagement.

Local leadership comments

Councillor Salma Arif, deputy leader of Leeds City Council and executive member for economy, said:

“Markets are part of the fabric of life in many communities across Leeds and we are determined, as a council, to do everything we can to support them. I’m really pleased, therefore, that our consultation has shown such strong backing for the specialist markets we are now planning to host on Saturdays and Sundays in Pudsey. There should be a real buzz around these events and it’s our hope that people attending them will be more likely to visit the market on its normal trading days during the week. They also have the potential to help shops and other businesses in the wider community by bringing more people into the town centre. I look forward to seeing what the schedule for the new weekend markets has to offer once it has been announced.”
