Local female students explore career opportunities in technology

Female students from schools across Leeds attended a Women in Tech event on 13 October at Leeds City College’s Printworks campus. The event, held in recognition of Ada Lovelace Day, aimed to highlight the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and to encourage young women to consider careers in technology.

Event highlights and speakers

The event was organised by the Ahead Partnership, a non-profit organisation that supports disadvantaged young people by connecting them with employment opportunities. It featured a keynote speech from Saffy Blellock, a former Digital Support Services T Level student at Leeds City College and current apprentice at Accenture. Blellock encouraged students to pursue their interests in technology despite any fears, emphasising the value of gaining knowledge through opportunities.

Following the speech, students participated in a panel discussion with women working in various technology roles. The panel included:

  • Ruth Oni, Senior Data Scientist at Skipton Building Society
  • Ann Prince, Deputy Head of Business and Finance and Digital and IT at Leeds City College
  • Salma Firdos, Senior IT Auditor at Skipton Building Society
  • Megan Bower, Engineering Consultant at Burendo

The panellists discussed the diversity of careers available in the technology sector and addressed common misconceptions about working in tech. They highlighted the importance of skills such as communication and adaptability alongside technical expertise. Ruth Oni noted the collaborative nature of her work, stating that projects are never completed in isolation. Megan Bower spoke about the social aspects of the industry, countering the stereotype of IT professionals working alone.

Workshops and student involvement

Throughout the day, visiting students took part in workshops supported by T Level students from Leeds City College’s School of Digital and IT. Anita Emeribe, a current Digital Support and Security T Level student and STEM ambassador, said the event was about more than technology; it was also about representation and building confidence among young women in STEM fields.

Organisers reflect on the event

Sukhdeep Virdi, Head of Digital and IT at Leeds City College, described the event as a success, noting the enthusiasm and engagement of the students. Virdi expressed pride in supporting young women as they explore STEM career paths and indicated plans to host similar events in the future. Thanks were extended to the Ahead Partnership and college staff who contributed to the event.
