Final Surfacing Advances Dawsons Corner Improvement Scheme
October 23, 2026Key roadworks to take place throughout November
The Dawsons Corner and Stanningley Bypass improvement project in Leeds is progressing towards completion, with a major programme of final road surfacing scheduled to begin in November 2026. The works aim to upgrade one of the city’s busiest junctions, with the scheme expected to finish in early 2027.
Details of the surfacing works
The surfacing work will run from Monday 9 November to Sunday 29 November and will involve overnight lane and road closures across Dawsons Corner and surrounding routes. Work hours are generally planned between 8pm and 5am, with roads reopening each morning. Due to the potential impact of poor weather, the schedule may be subject to change, with contingency dates included where necessary.
The surfacing will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption. Closures will affect various parts of Dawsons Corner, Bradford Road, Stanningley Bypass, and Owlcotes Lane at different times. Signed diversion routes will be in place to guide road users during closures.
Impact on local access and businesses
- Access arrangements for New Pudsey Station will change during some phases of the works.
- Temporary restrictions will be implemented at entrances to some residential streets.
- Residents and businesses directly affected will receive specific information regarding access changes.
- Businesses in the area, including Owlcotes Shopping Centre, will remain open throughout the works.
Road users are advised to plan their journeys in advance, allow extra time, and follow the signed diversion routes during the overnight closures.
Project scope and benefits
The £44 million scheme is designed to improve journeys through Dawsons Corner by enhancing road capacity, safety, and accessibility. It will provide better routes for pedestrians, cyclists, and wheelchair users, support more reliable bus services, and improve connections between Leeds and Bradford.
Additional features of the project include:
- Resurfacing of the Stanningley Bypass.
- Flood prevention measures, including a large underground water attenuation tank.
- Installation of new Weaver Network bus stops.
- New pedestrian crossings to support local schools.
- Landscaping and tree planting as part of the finishing stages.
Upcoming works and completion
Following the main surfacing programme in November, further overnight works are planned between 30 November and the end of December 2026. These will include final adjustments to traffic signals, landscaping, and other finishing touches. Resident access will be maintained throughout these final stages.
Local usage and expected outcomes
Approximately 57,000 vehicles and 1,200 pedestrians and cyclists use Dawsons Corner daily. Upon completion, the improvements are expected to provide enhanced walking and cycling connections, better bus infrastructure, increased road capacity, and improved flood resilience.
