October 23, 2026New arrival set to support traditional farming education
A young Shire horse named Batley Charlotte Gray, or Charlotte, has recently arrived at Temple Newsam’s Home Farm. The 17-month-old horse is expected to become a familiar presence at the farm as she undergoes training to assist with demonstrating traditional farming practices to visitors.
Background on the Shire Horse
Shire horses were once a common sight on farms across the UK, primarily used for pulling carts and ploughs. The breed is now classified as At Risk by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust due to declining numbers, highlighting the importance of efforts to preserve it.
Charlotte’s Role at Temple Newsam
- Charlotte arrived on 18 October 2026 and will continue to grow, with Shire horses typically maturing between five and seven years old.
- She will undergo gradual training to become accustomed to people and learn commands.
- Over time, Charlotte will support various activities around the farm, helping to educate visitors about the historical role of Shire horses in agriculture.
Charlotte’s arrival marks the return of a Shire horse to Temple Newsam Farm, where she has already attracted attention from visitors.
