Local 14+ Academies students showcase diverse talents in new book

A group of students from the 14+ Academies have recently published a creative writing anthology titled Colour, featuring a collection of short stories, poems, and reflective pieces. The project provided an opportunity for students to explore a variety of themes and genres, moving beyond digital platforms to express their thoughts and experiences through writing.

Exploring important themes through writing

The anthology includes works that address significant topics such as mental health and identity. The students were encouraged to write across different formats, allowing them to develop their creative skills and personal expression. One participant commented on the experience, noting the value of creating something tangible: “I really enjoyed creating something which can be viewed and enjoyed in the real world as opposed to being strictly digital.” Another student highlighted the benefit of sharing diverse perspectives: “I like listening to what other people have written because it helps people understand real life situations in a different format. Hearing what it means to everyone is really nice.”

Editing and presentation

The submissions were reviewed and edited by John Davison, a teacher at the 14+ Academies, who organised the content into thematic sections based on colour. He remarked on the quality of the students’ work, stating that many pieces reached a professional standard through the editing process. He also expressed optimism about the students’ future potential as writers.

The book’s cover art and internal illustrations were created by Graphic Design students from the Quarry Hill campus, which houses departments including Social Science and Creative Arts. The campus offers specialist facilities such as digital suites, darkrooms, and creative studios, contributing to the visual presentation of the anthology.

Launch event and recognition

The anthology launch took place on 29 September, celebrating the work of 83 students whose writing was published in the book. Niki McKenna, Head of 14+ Academies, praised the students’ achievements and the collaborative nature of the project, which brought together creative writing and graphic design talents.
