As England’s national football team prepares to begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, Leeds is reflecting on its connection to the country’s only World Cup victory in 1966. Leeds Central Library has put on display a significant photograph and a signed book commemorating the Leeds United players who were part of the victorious England squad that year.
Celebrating Leeds United’s role in 1966 triumph
The photograph and book date back to 3 August 1966, when the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Alderman Joshua S Walsh, hosted a civic reception at Leeds Civic Hall to honour the players following England’s 4-2 extra time win over West Germany at Wembley Stadium. This remains the only time the England men’s team has won the FIFA World Cup.
The display features key Leeds United figures including Jack Charlton, who started as centre half, and Norman Hunter, who was part of the squad providing defensive cover despite not playing in the final. Also present at the reception were Leeds United manager Don Revie and coach Les Cocker, who was also assistant to England manager Alf Ramsey.
