Classic British Sitcom Returns to the Stage

Nearly 50 years after its original television debut, the iconic British sitcom Fawlty Towers is being adapted into a stage play by its co-creator John Cleese. Following successful runs in London’s West End and a UK tour, the production will visit Leeds Grand Theatre from Tuesday 6 to Saturday 10 January 2026.

About the Production

The stage adaptation, directed by Caroline Jay Ranger, incorporates three of the most well-known sketches from the original TV series. John Cleese himself has adapted the material and added a new finale to bring the story to a close. The play features a cast including Danny Bayne as Basil Fawlty, Mia Austen as Sybil Fawlty, and Joanne Clifton as Polly.

The show recreates the farcical chaos of the original series, including the threatened visit of hotel inspectors, a group of German tourists, and Basil’s attempts to conceal his gambling from Sybil, often complicated by the character Manuel, played by Hemi Yeroham.

Reception and Background

  • The play opened at London’s Apollo Theatre in May 2024 and received positive reviews, with critics describing it as “hugely entertaining” and “the funniest show in town.”
  • It enjoyed two sold-out West End seasons and a 10-month UK tour starting September 2024.
  • John Cleese expressed confidence in the production, noting the enduring popularity of farce in British theatre.

John Cleese’s Current Projects

At 85, John Cleese has been involved in several projects related to his work and legacy. He recently published a book titled Fawlty Towers: Fawlts And All – My Favourite Moments to mark 50 years since the sitcom’s debut. Alongside his daughter Camilla, he is developing a potential reboot of the TV series set in a Caribbean motel, as well as a stage musical adaptation of A Fish Called Wanda.

Additionally, Cleese is working on a new film script called Lookalikes, which involves real celebrities playing lookalikes. The script is reportedly with Arnold Schwarzenegger for consideration.

Additional Notes

  • John Cleese declined a CBE in 1996 and has indicated he would also turn down a knighthood, valuing the appreciation of audiences over formal honours.
  • He emphasises the importance of laughter and comedy in helping people through difficult times.
