Leeds Actors in Training Present New Adaptation of Medea

June 1, 2026 Off By

A contemporary take on a classical tragedy

Leeds Actors in Training (LAIT) are set to perform a new adaptation of Euripides’ ancient tragedy Medea at City Varieties Music Hall on 26 June 2026. The production, adapted and directed by Lizi Patch, offers a fresh interpretation of the play originally written in 431 BC, exploring its enduring themes through a modern lens.

The story and its themes

Medea tells the story of its eponymous protagonist, the wife of Jason of the Argonauts, who faces exile multiple times after a series of tragic and violent events. These include killing her own brother and tricking Pelias’ daughters into killing him, both acts motivated by her love for Jason, and later being cast out of Corinth when Jason takes a new bride.

The production focuses on the complex emotional states of Medea, highlighting themes of feminism and xenophobia that remain relevant today. The ensemble cast from LAIT uses bold storytelling, movement, and theatricality to bring these issues to the stage.
