February 18, 2026Performers Share Experiences of Bringing Iconic Star’s Story to Stage
Two actresses currently starring as Tina Turner in the UK tour of TINA – The Tina Turner Musical have spoken about their personal connections to the legendary singer and the challenges of portraying her on stage. Jochebel Ohene MacCarthy and Elle Ma-Kinga N’Zuzi alternate in the role, which traces Tina Turner’s journey from her early life in Nutbush, Tennessee, to international stardom.
Remembering Tina Turner
Tina Turner, born Anna Mae Bullock, passed away on 24 May 2023 at her home in Küsnacht, Switzerland, aged 83. MacCarthy, who was performing as Tina in the Australian production at the time, described the night following the news of Turner’s death as one of the most emotional of her career. She recalled the poignancy of performing the show with the awareness of Turner’s recent passing and the packed audience paying tribute to the star.
Neither MacCarthy nor N’Zuzi had the chance to meet Turner in person. MacCarthy joined the cast shortly after Turner’s visit during a cast change, while N’Zuzi joined later as an alternate. MacCarthy later visited Turner’s home in Switzerland to pay her respects.
Pathways to Playing Tina
- Jochebel Ohene MacCarthy first encountered Tina Turner’s name as a child through a singing birthday card featuring the song “Simply the Best”.
- Elle Ma-Kinga N’Zuzi was introduced to Turner’s music by her foster father and had experience performing songs like “Proud Mary” in rock bands before being cast in the musical.
N’Zuzi described her casting as somewhat serendipitous, having been contacted by producers while working in Germany.
Portraying an Icon
Both actresses have dedicated significant effort to capturing Turner’s distinctive style, from her powerful vocals to her trademark stage presence. They have worked closely with choreographer Simone Mistry-Palmer, who had previously worked with Turner, to ensure authenticity in the performance.
MacCarthy noted the time it took to master Turner’s iconic strut and the ongoing process of studying her performances to improve their portrayal. N’Zuzi highlighted how audiences respond enthusiastically, especially during the performance of “Simply the Best”, which concludes the musical’s concert finale.
Audience Reactions and Personal Reflections
Both actresses described the emotional impact of audience appreciation, with MacCarthy sharing how some spectators had seen Turner live and expressed gratitude for reliving those memories through the show. N’Zuzi recounted moments of recognition and validation from fans after performances.
When asked what they would say to Tina Turner if she appeared in their dressing room, both actresses expressed admiration and a desire to thank her for her influence and legacy.
