Apprentice Champions Young People’s Voices in West Yorkshire
July 10, 2026James Pearson uses his apprenticeship to support local youth
James Pearson, a Business Administration apprentice, has been actively involved in representing and advocating for young people across West Yorkshire. His journey began at Leeds City College in 2024, where he studied Level 3 Public Services with an initial aim of joining the police force. However, his experiences volunteering with a local charity shifted his focus towards community support.
From Volunteering to Apprenticeship
James volunteered at CATCH Leeds, a charity dedicated to helping vulnerable individuals achieve their potential. This experience inspired him to pursue an apprenticeship with the organisation. In September 2025, he started a Level 3 Business Administration apprenticeship at CATCH Leeds, combining practical training with his passion for community work.
Engagement and Recognition
Since beginning his apprenticeship, James has taken on various roles that allow him to advocate for young people. Notably, in July, he spoke alongside the Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin, representing the perspectives of young people in the region. Reflecting on the event, James described it as a significant moment that highlighted the importance of community and collaboration.
James also serves as an ambassador for the Yorkshire and Humber Apprenticeship Network. This group aims to inspire young people, support local communities, and promote the value of apprenticeships.
Awards and Personal Growth
Recently, James was named Runner-Up Apprentice of the Year in Business at the Alf Cooke Awards, which celebrate student achievements. He expressed pride in this recognition and acknowledged the support he has received throughout his apprenticeship journey.
Looking Ahead
James has spoken about how his apprenticeship has boosted his confidence and enabled him to use his voice within the community. Working in the third sector has allowed him to apply his personal experiences towards making a positive impact, particularly in supporting young people who may otherwise be unheard.
