Valeriia’s journey highlights resilience and career rebuilding

Valeriia, a Ukrainian refugee who arrived in the UK with limited English and no prior knowledge of the British education system, has made significant progress through an apprenticeship at Luminate Education Group. Her story reflects determination and adaptability in the face of considerable challenges.

Adapting to a new life and career

After fleeing the war in Ukraine, Valeriia settled in the UK with a host family. Soon after her arrival, she secured a part-time role in a primary school, marking the beginning of her integration into the local education sector. In November 2023, she started a Level 2 apprenticeship, focusing on education support.

Despite initial difficulties with language and unfamiliarity with UK professional practices, Valeriia committed to improving her skills through online lessons and practical experience. Her dedication led to a progression into a Level 3 apprenticeship within the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Department.

Role and responsibilities in the SEND Department

Valeriia’s work involves supporting the implementation of a new module in the Navigate system, which assists Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) learners. Her weekly tasks include:

  • Conducting audit checks
  • Creating detailed reports
  • Participating in team discussions
  • Providing administrative support across multiple campuses
  • Balancing study commitments alongside work responsibilities

Her line manager has noted Valeriia’s attention to detail and willingness to challenge existing practices, contributing to improvements in processes governed by local authorities.

Learning and personal development

Through her apprenticeship, Valeriia has gained knowledge about SEND systems, job roles, EHCP plans and reviews, risk assessments, and the importance of values in professional practice. She acknowledges initial self-doubt but reports growing confidence and a stronger sense of belonging within her team.

Outside of work, Valeriia remains connected to her roots by spending time weaving nets to support Ukraine, demonstrating her ongoing commitment to her home country.

Future plans and views on apprenticeships

Valeriia intends to continue her career in education, with interests spanning education, art, and psychology. She advocates for apprenticeships as valuable pathways for career development, especially for those facing challenges or uncertainty. She emphasises the importance of support from colleagues and assessors in facilitating growth and learning.

Her experience underscores the potential of apprenticeships to provide inclusive opportunities and support for individuals rebuilding their lives and careers in new environments.
