Efforts to Improve Transparency in UK Business Practices

Concerns over ethical shopping and the environmental impact of consumer products have prompted a coalition of organisations to call for new legislation aimed at protecting people and the planet throughout business supply chains in the UK.

Many consumers find it challenging to assess the ethical credentials of everyday items such as washing powder. Factors such as recyclable packaging, the presence of plastic pods, chemical content harmful to wildlife, sourcing distance, responsible ingredient sourcing, and fair treatment and pay of workers all contribute to the complexity of making informed choices.

No More Profit From Harm Campaign

The Good Business Matters coalition, which includes over 50 campaigning organisations such as Friends of the Earth, Transform Trade, the Fairtrade Foundation, and Amnesty International, is advocating for a new law to ensure UK businesses prevent harm to people and the environment throughout their supply chains.

The campaign highlights the need for clear, trustworthy labels that communicate ethical standards directly to consumers, simplifying the decision-making process.

Local Involvement: Leeds Craftivists

In Leeds, the group Leeds Craftivists is participating in the campaign by creating embroidered labels with messages such as “free from harm,” “water quality protected,” and “no forced labour.” These labels are intended to raise awareness and will be presented at a Mass Lobby of Parliament scheduled for 21 October.

Members of the public are invited to contribute by designing their own labels through drawing, painting, or stitching. Contributions can be sent to 43 The Calls, Leeds, LS2 7EY. Additionally, workshops are planned for 5 October and 2 November, with registration available online.
