New clinic offers holistic care for children with weight-related health issues

A specialised clinic providing support for overweight children across Yorkshire has been operating since May 2022 at Leeds Children’s Hospital. The Complications of Excess Weight Clinic offers care for young patients aged between 2 and 18 years who may be experiencing health problems linked to obesity, including diabetes and fatty liver disease.

Clinic services and patient referrals

The clinic receives approximately 20 new referrals each month. The healthcare team works closely with these children and their families to develop personalised plans aimed at improving diet and increasing physical activity. The service currently supports around 100 young people annually.

Use of charity funding

Donations totalling over £5,000 have been provided to support initiatives led by the clinic team. According to Helen Robinson, Clinical Nurse Specialist Team Leader for the Complications of Excess Weight Clinic, the funding has contributed to making the clinic environment more family friendly. This includes efforts to reduce the clinical feel of the space, helping young patients feel more comfortable and engaged during their visits and activities.

Clinic goals and approach

  • Provide holistic care addressing both medical and lifestyle factors related to excess weight
  • Support children with underlying health conditions linked to obesity
  • Encourage healthier eating habits and increased physical activity
  • Create a welcoming environment for children and their families

The Complications of Excess Weight Clinic represents an important resource for families in Yorkshire seeking specialised support for children facing challenges related to obesity and its complications.
