Volunteering and community spirit at Cross Green Growing Together

Mary, a long-standing volunteer with Cross Green Growing Together, has shared insights into the development and impact of the community garden and hub in Cross Green. The project began with a small space on a railway bridge and has since expanded to a larger site, following significant efforts to clear and prepare the area.

Mary highlighted some of the challenges faced in the early days, including incidents of vandalism and anti-social behaviour. Despite these obstacles, the group has established a valued community space that is now appreciated by many local residents.

Activities and community engagement

Cross Green Growing Together offers a variety of activities aimed at supporting residents’ needs and promoting community cohesion. These include:

  • Gardening groups
  • Cooking sessions
  • After school clubs
  • Coffee mornings

The project takes a holistic approach, aiming to provide a safe and welcoming environment where people from diverse backgrounds can come together, learn from one another, and foster mutual respect and kindness.

Support from Leeds Community Foundation

Leeds Community Foundation has provided multiple grants to support the development of Cross Green Growing Together. Funding has contributed towards the creation of raised beds and seating areas, Healthy Holidays programmes, and more recently, a Digital Skills project designed to improve digital inclusion among local residents.

Mary emphasised the importance of this support, describing Leeds Community Foundation as “the backbone” of their progress. The community garden and hub now serve as a consistent and accessible space for residents, including those from a transient community, to engage in positive activities and build connections.

Mary concluded by expressing a commitment to maintaining a happy and hopeful atmosphere within the community, ensuring that everyone is welcome and supported.
