Major development aims to improve local sports facilities and community space

Work has started on a new multi-million-pound sports hub in Calverley, designed to provide enhanced sports facilities and a community meeting space. The project, known as Woodhall Sports Hub, is expected to be completed in time for the 2026/27 playing season and will feature a combination of artificial and natural grass pitches along with additional amenities.

Details of the Woodhall Sports Hub

  • Three full-sized artificial third generation (3G) pitches
  • One new natural grass pitch
  • Facilities to support local junior sports teams with equal access
  • A café and play areas for community use
  • Biodiversity habitats with native trees and wildflowers
  • Improved landscaping, parking, footpaths, and walking routes
  • A meeting room and a changing places toilet

The development is valued at £9.6 million and has received part funding from the Premier League, The Football Association (FA), and the government’s Football Foundation. The project is part of a wider initiative to increase the number of third generation artificial grass pitches across the country.

Addressing Local Sports Pitch Shortages

Calverley currently faces a shortage of sports pitches, with many teams struggling to find regular training and match venues. Existing natural grass pitches are heavily used and often suffer from waterlogging, leading to cancellations. The new artificial pitches aim to reduce pressure on these grass pitches and help address the shortfall of sports facilities in Leeds.

Encouraging Inclusive Participation

The sports hub will focus on promoting greater use by women’s and girls’ teams, as well as supporting participation from disadvantaged groups who may face barriers due to location or cost. The facility is intended to be accessible and welcoming to a broad range of community members.

Wider Programme and Management

Woodhall Sports Hub is one of two new sports hubs approved by Leeds City Council in July 2025, with a combined investment of £23.9 million. The second hub is planned for Temple Newsam, with work expected to begin in 2026.

Funding for the hubs comes from Leeds City Council, the Football Foundation, Section 106 developer contributions, and private sector sources. Once operational, the hubs will be managed by the National Football Trust, a not-for-profit organisation, with any surplus income reinvested in outdoor sports facilities across Leeds. The buildings will be leased to and operated by Leisure United.

Statements from Officials

Councillor Salma Arif, Leeds City Council’s executive member for adult social care, active lifestyles and culture, said the project represents a significant step towards encouraging active and healthy lifestyles in Leeds by providing quality sports facilities and community spaces.

Robert Sullivan, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, highlighted the importance of good quality playing facilities in improving physical and mental health, strengthening communities, and expressed support for the development of the sports hubs in Leeds.
