A family’s journey through pregnancy complications and loss

Alex and Lucy Beasley’s experience highlights the difficulties some families face when trying to have children, particularly when pre-existing health conditions are involved. Their story, shared by Leeds Hospitals Charity, details the challenges they encountered during pregnancy and the impact of medical complications.

Initial pregnancy and miscarriage

Following their engagement in 2019, Lucy Beasley became pregnant. However, due to her Type 1 diabetes, she developed serious complications including heart failure and renal disease. Around 12 weeks into the pregnancy, the couple suffered a miscarriage. The experience was described as traumatic, leading them to pause their plans to start a family and focus on other aspects of their lives.

Life changes and renewed hope

  • Moved house
  • Got a dog
  • Married during the COVID-19 pandemic in late 2020

During this period, Lucy’s diabetes and blood pressure were brought under control. In 2021, the couple discovered Lucy was pregnant again, this time expecting twins.

Complications during twin pregnancy

The twin pregnancy placed significant strain on Lucy’s health. Tragically, one of the babies died early in the pregnancy. Lucy also developed chronic anaemia and required additional medical support throughout this period.

Support and ongoing care

The couple’s story emphasises the importance of specialised medical care and planning for pregnancies complicated by chronic health conditions. It also sheds light on the emotional and physical toll such experiences can have on families.
