A Leeds-based group supporting older people through sport recently welcomed former England cricket captain Nasser Hussain, who shared highlights from his playing and broadcasting career. The visit was part of a session organised by Sporting Memories, a charity and social enterprise that helps older adults, including those living with dementia, long-term conditions, or isolation, to reconnect through reminiscence and light physical activity.
Sporting Memories sessions in Leeds
Sporting Memories runs regular sessions nationwide, including several in Leeds. The group in Holt Park meets weekly at Holt Park Active Leisure Centre, with support from Leeds City Council’s Active Leeds service. The council assists the charity by helping to establish sessions across the city and providing volunteers to support activities.
Malcolm Hall, a volunteer with Sporting Memories through Active Leeds, described the sessions as a valuable opportunity for participants to recall sporting events and personal memories. He said:
“I am regularly taken aback by the memories that are sparked by sporting events, be they cup finals, Wimbledon visits or playground games. Even attendees who profess not to have an interest in sport invariably are able to contribute and to add their own recollections.”
“Every session is a fun-filled reminder of enjoyable, always heart-warming, experiences. It’s a joy to facilitate the group and to see the difference it makes to people’s mood.”
Activities tailored to members’ interests and abilities
The activities at Sporting Memories sessions are chosen based on members’ sporting interests, preferences, and physical capabilities. These include boccia, target games, and various balance and strength exercises designed to be inclusive and accessible.
David Cornish, a regular attendee and helper in his mid-80s, highlighted the positive impact of the sessions:
“Sporting Memories at Holt Park is enjoyed by so many, whether they be physically disabled, lonely or living with dementia.”
“As a helper, I derive so much pleasure and satisfaction in watching and hearing everyone recall so many of their own and others’ memories of sporting personalities and events. Time well spent and without doubt a lot of fun.”
Council support and community benefits
Councillor Salma Arif, Leeds City Council’s executive member for adult social care, active lifestyles and culture, emphasised the importance of such groups in combating loneliness among older people. She said:
“We’re very proud of the work we do together with Sporting Memories and are pleased to support them in running these sessions.”
“We know that as people get older they sometimes get more lonely and groups such as this one are vital in bringing people together to have fun and reminisce.”
