Leeds postal voters urged to update information before January 31, 2026

Leeds City Council has issued a reminder to postal voters in the city to renew their postal vote applications before the deadline of 31 January 2026. This renewal is necessary to prevent their postal voting option from being cancelled.

Renewal required under Elections Act 2022

Postal voters who applied to vote by post before 30 January 2024 must renew their details as part of the government’s Elections Act 2022 requirements. The Act mandates that postal vote applications be renewed every three years and introduces an identity verification process.

Leeds City Council has already contacted postal voters twice this year to encourage them to complete the renewal process. Despite these efforts, approximately 60,000 postal voters in Leeds have yet to respond.

How to renew postal vote details

The council advises that the quickest way to renew postal vote details is online via the official government website. The application requires the following information:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • National Insurance number
  • A clear image of the applicant’s signature

Applicants’ identities will be checked against records held by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). If this check is unsuccessful, further evidence of identity will be required.

For those unable to apply online, paper application forms have been sent by post and can also be downloaded from the government’s website.

Next local elections and further information

The next local government elections in Leeds are scheduled for Thursday 7 May 2026. Postal voters who no longer require this voting method are advised to contact the Electoral Registration Officer immediately.
