Digital Inclusion Fund Supports Over 1,200 People in Leeds

Efforts to Bridge the Digital Divide in Leeds Continue

The Leeds Digital Inclusion Fund, a partnership involving 100% Digital Leeds and Leeds Digital Ball, has recently announced the impact of its third round of grants awarded in 2024. The fund aims to address digital exclusion by providing local people with the necessary skills, support, and equipment to participate in the digital world.

Grant Distribution and Activities

In the third round, nearly £73,000 was distributed among nine community organisations across Leeds. These organisations used the funding to deliver a variety of activities, including:

• Digital support sessions
• Drop-in centres and workshops
• Provision of Wi-Fi access
• Distribution of SIM cards
• Access to digital technology

Collectively, these initiatives supported more than 1,200 individuals, helping them to engage with online services such as booking medical appointments, accessing support services, and maintaining communication with family and friends.

Impact on Participants

The programme’s impact extends beyond basic digital skills. According to Complete Woman, one of the funded organisations, the project has contributed to enhanced wellbeing, independence, and inclusion within the community.

Quantitative data from participants shows:

• 779 people reported increased aspirations and goals
• 663 people felt less isolated and more connected
• 652 people experienced increased confidence

One participant supported by Getting Clean, another funded organisation, shared their experience of learning to set up an email account, apply for Universal Credit, access housing and NHS services, and use video calling to connect with family. The individual noted a significant change in confidence, stating, “I used to feel embarrassed not knowing how to do anything online. Now I can do things for myself.”

Ongoing Funding and Future Plans

Following this round, a fourth round of grants has already been awarded, bringing the total investment by the Leeds Digital Inclusion Fund to over £300,000. The funds continue to support digital inclusion efforts across Leeds.

Additionally, the 2024 Leeds Digital Ball raised more than £75,000 to support future rounds of funding, indicating ongoing commitment to reducing digital exclusion in the city.
