Donations Fund Teddy Bear Clinic for Children with Diabetes
November 27, 2025Innovative Play-Led Programme Supports Young Patients in Leeds
Donations to Leeds Hospitals Charity are helping to fund a pioneering initiative aimed at supporting children under twelve living with Type 1 diabetes at Leeds Children’s Hospital. The programme includes a series of events throughout the year designed to provide education and peer interaction in a supportive environment.
Teddy Bear Clinic Offers Unique Educational Experience
One of the key events funded by the charity is the annual teddy bear clinic. This initiative encourages children to engage with specially modified teddy bears, allowing them to learn about diabetes in a playful and less clinical setting. The event aims to help children step away from the challenges of their diagnosis and connect with others facing similar experiences.
The teddy bear clinic is held at the Diabetes Centre at St James’s Hospital. During the event, children receive passports and participate in a trail-style activity that combines education with interactive play. This approach is intended to make learning about diabetes management more accessible and enjoyable for young patients.
Scope of Diabetes Care at Leeds Children’s Hospital
Leeds Children’s Hospital currently provides care for over 500 children and young people under the age of 20 living with various forms of diabetes, including Type 1, Type 2, and monogenic diabetes. Of these, more than 180 children and young people are invited to attend the teddy bear clinic, which focuses specifically on paediatric diabetes education.
The initiative reflects ongoing efforts to support children with diabetes and their families through innovative educational programmes that complement medical treatment.
