From Animation to Food Service: A Journey of Rediscovery

Lita Leikarte, previously a high-achieving Creative Arts student, has recently transitioned into a role within the catering team at Leeds City College. Her journey began during Culture Week earlier this year, an event designed to celebrate cultural diversity through food, music, art, dance, and fashion across the college’s campuses.

Culture Week Experience Inspires Career Change

During Culture Week, held at the Quarry Hill campus, Lita spent three days cooking a variety of dishes for fellow students. Under the supervision of Fabrice Teston, Deputy Head of Food and Catering Services, she rediscovered her enjoyment of food preparation. This experience prompted her to apply for a catering role at the college’s Enfield Centre, where she was successful in securing a position.

New Role and Future Plans

Lita will continue her role as a food service assistant when the Enfield Centre relocates to its new premises at Mabgate next year. Reflecting on her experience, she noted that the short period during Culture Week reignited her passion for cooking and catering, despite originally planning to pursue a patisserie course.

She described the catering staff as supportive and helpful, which contributed to her successful transition into the new role. Her colleagues at the Enfield campus have also been described as friendly and reliable.

Recognition and Achievements

  • Lita achieved triple Distinction stars in her BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animation.
  • She received the Artistry Excellence Award at the college’s Star Awards this year.

Although currently focused on her catering career, Lita has not ruled out the possibility of returning to animation in the future.

Supporting Students’ Career Development

Fabrice Teston highlighted Lita’s enthusiasm and positive attitude during Culture Week as key factors in her successful application for the catering role. He expressed satisfaction in supporting students who demonstrate a genuine passion for hospitality to take their first steps in the industry.

Culture Week, organised through Student Voice, continues to provide opportunities for students to explore different interests and cultures within the college community.
