Leeds Child Spends Christmas in Hospital During Treatment
November 3, 2025Blake’s Christmas in Leeds Children’s Hospital
Eleven-year-old Blake spent Christmas in Leeds Children’s Hospital while undergoing treatment for leukaemia. Despite the challenges of being in hospital over the festive period, Blake experienced moments of joy, supported by gifts from the hospital’s Wish List and activities organised by the Play Team.
Blake’s Diagnosis and Early Symptoms
Before starting secondary school, Blake was an active child who enjoyed playing with his brothers and had recently taken up martial arts. In August 2021, his mother, Steph, noticed several concerning symptoms including a swollen eye, low energy levels, and difficulty hearing from one ear. These signs prompted multiple visits to their GP, which eventually led to further investigations.
Support During Hospital Stay
Blake’s time in hospital over Christmas was made more bearable through the support of the Leeds Children’s Hospital Play Team, who provide activities and entertainment for young patients. Additionally, gifts purchased from the hospital’s Wish List helped to bring comfort and festive cheer to Blake and other children receiving treatment.
Community Involvement
The Wish List allows members of the public to buy gifts for children in hospital, aiming to provide what the charity describes as “The Gift of Hope”. These donations contribute to improving the experience of children like Blake during their hospital stays.
