Long-serving trustee Tim Simpson concludes nearly two decades of service

Leeds Children’s Charity at Lineham Farm has marked the departure of Tim Simpson, who is stepping down after 18 years as a trustee. His tenure has coincided with significant changes and growth within the organisation, which supports children across Leeds.

Personal and Historical Ties to Lineham Farm

Tim Simpson’s connection to Lineham Farm is closely linked to his late mother, Councillor Denise Atkinson MBE, former Lord Mayor of Leeds. In 1992, at her inauguration, she proposed transforming the derelict outbuildings of a 345-year-old farm into a centre for disadvantaged children and young people. This vision led to the opening of Lineham Farm Children’s Centre in May 1993, providing outdoor learning and respite for children across the city.

The charity itself has roots dating back to 1904, when Helen Currer Briggs, the Lady Mayoress of Leeds, founded the Leeds Poor Children’s Holiday Camp Association. This organisation offered free holidays to children from families on very low incomes and later evolved into Leeds Children’s Charity in 2010.

Changes and Mergers

  • In 2016, the charity sold its Silverdale site due to financial pressures, a move intended to secure its long-term sustainability.
  • In 2020, Lineham Farm Children’s Trust merged with Leeds Children’s Charity, forming Leeds Children’s Charity at Lineham Farm, aiming to strengthen support for children from diverse backgrounds.

Role and Impact of Tim Simpson

With over 25 years of experience in human resources across various sectors, Tim Simpson contributed strategic and organisational expertise to the charity’s board. His leadership helped guide the organisation through periods of transformation, ensuring it continued to provide valuable services to children facing poverty, trauma, and other challenges.

Tim has expressed a personal sense of responsibility to support others, reflecting values shared with his mother. Under his trusteeship, many children have benefited from opportunities to engage in outdoor activities, build confidence, and develop friendships in a safe environment.

Charity’s Acknowledgement

Sharon Milner, Chief Executive of Leeds Children’s Charity at Lineham Farm, acknowledged Tim Simpson’s contribution, stating that his wisdom and commitment have had a lasting effect on both the charity and the children it serves. She extended best wishes to him for the future.
