Local college team competes in annual event promoting inclusion

For the second year running, staff from Leeds College of Building (LCB) participated in the Big Construction Diversity Challenge, an event aimed at breaking down barriers and changing perceptions within the construction industry. The competition took place at Newark Showground and featured a series of activities designed to highlight diversity and teamwork.

‘Built Different’ team competes in multiple events

The LCB team, competing under the name ‘Built Different’, consisted of ten members drawn from various departments including Partnerships & Skills, Exams, and Compliance. Over the course of the day, the team took part in 16 different events such as Human Table Football, the Catwalk Challenge, and a Diversity Dance Off.

At the lunchtime break, the team was leading the leaderboard, mirroring their strong performance from the previous year. However, the afternoon events proved challenging, and the team dropped down the rankings. Despite this, they finished one place higher than their position at the inaugural event in 2025.

Event supports diversity and inclusion in construction

Rob Smith, Head of Partnerships & Skills at LCB, commented on the event:

  • He noted the alignment of the challenge with the college’s values on diversity and inclusion.
  • He highlighted the diverse makeup of the team, which included a range of ages, genders, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • He described the day as enjoyable and recommended participation in future events for networking, team building, and promoting diversity within the construction sector.

Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion

Leeds College of Building continues to promote equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) within its community and the wider construction industry. Staff participation in events such as the Big Construction Diversity Challenge reflects this ongoing commitment.
