Support available for residents facing financial and health challenges this winter

As winter approaches, Leeds City Council has issued a reminder about the range of support services available to residents struggling with the cost of living. The council has compiled resources to assist people with utility bills, debt, health, food, and shelter during the colder months.

Accessing support in Leeds

The council has created a dedicated webpage providing information on financial support, health advice, and food assistance. This resource aims to guide residents to the help they need during the winter period. It can be accessed at Together Leeds | Leeds.gov.uk.

Welcome Spaces initiative

Since 1 December, a network of Welcome Spaces has been operating across Leeds. These venues include libraries, community centres, and community hubs that offer warm, safe, and friendly environments. The spaces also provide assistance to those seeking further support.

Winter Coat Appeal

The Leeds Winter Coat Appeal is running to help residents stay warm by redistributing good quality, second-hand winter coats free of charge. The initiative supports both reducing waste and easing financial pressure. There are 42 donation points throughout the city for those wishing to contribute coats. Lists of donation and collection points are available on the council’s website.

Support for homelessness and rough sleeping

Additional support is available for individuals at risk of homelessness or rough sleeping. Advice and emergency assistance can be found at How we can help | Leeds.gov.uk. Members of the public concerned about someone sleeping rough are encouraged to contact Leeds’ street outreach team by phone on 0113 245 9445 or by email at Leeds.SOS@cgl.org.uk.

Council statement

Councillor Asghar Khan, Leeds City Council’s executive member for communities, customer service and community safety, acknowledged the difficulties many face during winter and the festive period. He emphasised the availability of Welcome Spaces and the importance of the council’s cost of living webpage as a comprehensive guide to support services.
