Support expressed for those affected by the Caribbean storm

The Leader of Leeds City Council, Councillor James Lewis, has issued a statement regarding the impact of Hurricane Melissa, which has been described as the strongest storm to hit the Caribbean in modern history. The hurricane has caused significant devastation across Jamaica and surrounding areas.

Councillor Lewis acknowledged the close ties many people in Leeds have with Jamaica and the wider Caribbean, recognising the concern this situation has caused within the local community. He said:

“Our hearts go out to the people of Jamaica and the Caribbean as we see the devastating impact of Hurricane Melissa. I know that many people in Leeds have longstanding family and community ties to Jamaica, and this is an anxious time for many. Our residents who are affected and their loved ones in Jamaica are in our thoughts.”

He also confirmed that the UK Government is actively monitoring the situation. According to Councillor Lewis, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) ministerial team has provided briefings, and the British High Commission in Kingston is offering support to British nationals on the island.

The UK Government is preparing to coordinate disaster response and humanitarian assistance in partnership with the Jamaican authorities.
