Honouring their sons through charitable giving at Christmas

A family from Leeds has established a meaningful festive tradition by making charitable donations in memory of their late son, whose favourite time of year was Christmas. In 2021, 13-year-old Hayyan passed away suddenly due to a rare medical condition. To commemorate him, the family has chosen to support a different charity each festive season.

This year, the family’s Christmas holds additional poignancy following the loss of their unborn baby, Hakim, earlier in 2023. In memory of both sons, they have made a donation to Leeds Hospitals Charity.

Supporting the Play Team at Leeds Children’s Hospital

The family recently visited Leeds Children’s Hospital to present a donation of £1,200 to Lisa Beaumont, Therapeutic & Specialised Play Manager. The funds will assist Leeds Hospitals Charity in continuing to support the Play Team, which provides therapeutic play services to young patients and their families.

The Play Team operates seven days a week, offering support aimed at reducing anxiety and distress for children undergoing treatment. The team’s work is made possible through donations and community support.

Background and impact

  • Hayyan would have turned 18 next year.
  • The family’s donation helps maintain the availability of play services throughout the week.
  • Therapeutic play is recognised as an important part of paediatric care, helping children cope with hospital experiences.

The family’s ongoing commitment to charitable giving during the festive season honours their sons’ memories while contributing to the wellbeing of other children facing health challenges.
