Leeds Hospitals Charity Memorial Walk to Honour Late Patient
February 26, 2026Local woman and friends to take part in 10-mile challenge
On 14 March, Nicola and a group of close friends and family will participate in the Leeds Hospitals Charity Memorial Walk, a 10-mile event held in memory of her late sister Marella. Marella passed away three years ago at the age of 64 after a battle with advanced lung cancer.
Remembering Marella’s Journey
Marella was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in 2021, which had spread to her brain. Despite the severity of her condition, she maintained her humour, energy, and love for life. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and was central to a close-knit family.
During her treatment at Leeds Cancer Centre, Marella underwent gamma knife brain surgery and received nearly two years of immunotherapy. Nicola recalled the care her sister received, highlighting the dedication of Dr Alison Young, the oncologists, and the entire Day Ward team. She stated that Marella was treated “like a queen” and that the medical staff did everything possible despite the advanced stage of her illness.
The Memorial Walk
The Memorial Walk is organised by Leeds Hospitals Charity and provides an opportunity for participants to remember loved ones who have received care at Leeds Teaching Hospitals. Nicola will be joined by her niece Lauren and three close friends, Bev, Helen, and Richard, to complete the 10-mile challenge.
