New charge point aims to support low-carbon transport in the city

Leeds has introduced its first public on-street electric vehicle (EV) charge point in the city centre, marking a significant development in the city’s efforts to encourage the use of low-emission vehicles. The new facility, located on St Paul’s Street, features four charging bays and is part of a broader plan to expand EV infrastructure across Leeds.

Expansion of EV charging network planned for 2026

The initial charge point is the first of many, with plans to install approximately 70 additional charge points throughout 2026. These will be situated in a variety of locations, including on-street and off-street sites such as residential areas, community halls, sports centres, and other city centre locations. The rollout is funded and operated by Believ in partnership with Leeds City Council.

Supporting Leeds’ net zero ambitions

The installation aligns with Leeds’ ambition to become the first net zero city in the UK. The city’s Connecting Leeds transport strategy highlights the importance of making it easier for drivers to transition to electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles by increasing the availability of charging points.

Statements from local officials and partners

  • Councillor Mohammed Rafique, Leeds City Council’s executive member for climate, energy, environment and green space, emphasised the city’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and supporting sustainable choices. He noted that while cycling, walking, or using public transport remain the preferred options, the city recognises the need to facilitate the switch to electric and hybrid vehicles.
  • Guy Bartlett, CEO of Believ, highlighted the company’s role in funding and installing the charge points, stating that the network will provide reliable access to EV charging for both residents and visitors, contributing to Leeds’ sustainability goals.

The development of this EV charging infrastructure represents a step towards enhancing sustainable transport options in Leeds, supporting the city’s environmental objectives and responding to the growing demand for electric vehicle facilities.
